The only art and archaeological museum in the city of Thrissur in the state of Kerala, was set up by the name of Sree Mulam Chithrasala. It has emerged as the biggest and largest museum in the state of Kerala.

Establishment of Archaeological Museum in Thrissur

The Archaeological Museum was initially set up as an art gallery in 1938, which was commenced in the balcony of Thrissur Town Hall. In 1948, the Picture gallery was expanded by adding the archaeological gallery to it.

Later in 1975, the Archaeology Department shifted the archaeological and picture gallery to Chembukavu and renamed it as the Archaeological Museum. Currently, all the administrative activities of the Archaeological Museum are undertaken by the State Archaeology Department.

The Ancient Artifact of Archaeological Museum in Thrissur

The museum displays the murals and the statues of most distinguished and known personalities along with the models, which are made out of plaster of paris, of renowned and ancient monuments and temples of the state of Kerala. The collection dating back to ancient period also includes olagrandhangal, manuscripts inscribed on palm leaves, Veerakallu, and the megaliths.

Veerakallu, the huge stones with pictorial representation of the ancient heroes and their weapons, are believed to date back to 7th century to 18th century. The megaliths range from the earthen pots to the urns, Stone Age tools and black and red wares, belonging to the Indus Valley civilization and the Harappa. All these artifacts have been known to be buried and re-discovered from the forests of Thrissur, Wayanad, and the Palakkad.

How to Reach Archaeological Museum in Thrissur

Nearest Railway Station: Thrissur Railway Station which is only about 3 kilometers from the Archaeological Museum.

From the station, head in the north towards the Kodungallur-Shornur Road / State Highway 22. Take the first right onto the Railway Station Road / Kodungallur-Shornur Road / State Highway 22. When you pass by the Kerala State Small Industry Association which will be to the right, turn left at Chettiyangadi junction onto the Kuruppam Road / Kodungallur-Shornur Road / State Highway 22.

As you cross the Punjab National Bank and ATM on the right, turn left at the Azmathulla Textiles onto the Kodungallur-Shornur Road / Swaraj Round W/ State Highway 22. When you pass by the Bharat Petrol Pump on the left, turn left at the Bini Tourist Home onto the Thrissur-Shoranur road. When you pass by the Kuntham on the left, at the roundabout take the fourth exit to stay on the Thrissur-Shoranur road. When you pass by the Chinmaya Bhuvaneswari Temple on the left, you will find the Archaeological Museum.

The Museum is open to visitors on all weekday except Mondays and national holidays. One can visit the museum anywhere between 10 am to 5 pm.
