Bible Tower in Thrissur
Bible Tower – The tallest church tower of Asia and the tallest construction in Kerala, the church can be seen from anywhere in the Thrissur city.The foundation of the church was laid in December 1929 and the church was completed by November 1940. The initial building of the church was guarded by two bell towers, the front one being 140 feet in height and the back one being 260 feet tall.
In 2002, then back side bell tower was reconstructed and in 2004, during the CBCI General Assembly, it was given the name of “Bible Tower.”
The Bible Tower has been certified as being earthquake-proof by the Geology Department of India.
The Bible Tower was declared open to public on January 7, 2007. The Bible Tower has a platform for its visitors providing them with the view of the whole city. The open platform spreads across 18 kilometers with an accommodation of 250 people. The church has a lift for its visitors up to 160 feet after which the visitors have to climb the stairs to reach the top of the Bible tower.
The Bible Tower has a red cross standing on its top which is visible from any part of the city.
Life of Jesus
The various structures in the Bible Tower reveal incidents from the life of Jesus and the insight into the early churches.The wooden door of the Bible Tower inscribes the words from the Bible which throw light on the life and sufferings of the Lord.
The beautiful wooden carvings depict the infant life of Jesus, while the stain glass shows the healing of the sick. The brass work shows the miracles done by the Lord, and the oil painting shows the sufferings and the passion of Jesus.
The murals, the terracota, and the canvas glorify the resurrection of Jesus.
Timings
The Bible Tower remains closed on Mondays. The timing for visitors is from 10 am to 6 pm from Tuesday to Friday, and from 10 am to 7.30 pm on Saturday and Sunday.Address: Bible Tower, Church Circle, Pillakad, Thrissur, Kerala 680001
How to Reach Bible Tower in Thrissur
Nearest Railway Station – Thrissur Railway Station is the nearest which is only 1 kilometer from the Bible Tower.From the station, move in the north Kodungallur-Shornur Road/ State Highway 22 towards the Railway Station road. Turn in the first right to remain on the Kodungallur-Shornur Road/ Railway Station Road/ State Highway 22. As you cross the Kerala State Small Industry Association on your right, at the Chettiyangadi junction continue onto the Post Office road. When you pass the Indian Bank MO road branch on the right, turn left at the Matha Medical Store onto the High road. Turn right at the Matha Medical Store onto the New Church road. Turn left onto the Church cir and you will see the Bible Tower on the right.
