Villangan Hills in Thrissur

The Villangan hills are situated about five kilometers away from the city of Thrissur and is a hillock that is spread over an area of 50 acres.

The top of the hills provide a clear view of the entire city, panning 360 degrees and also a glimpse of the famous kole wetlands. It is set at a height of about 300 m from sea level and presents a very calming atmosphere. The kol fields are located at its foot and provide for a dash of greenery that help in opening up your lungs by providing fresh, clean air.


The hill itself is made of clay and thus mostly appears red in colour but is majorly covered in lush green vegetation that is more often than not a result of the heavy rains that occur over the hills. Apart from the lush green grass, there are also several trees and shrubs like the bamboo and other tropical plants.

The sunset at the hills is one of the most spectacular of sights in the whole of Thrissur as myriad hues of the sun's rays fill up the sky whilst it slowly disappear down the horizon. One is advised to stay back till the sunset to take in the beauty and its splendour.

The hills also have a dedicated play area for children and an open air theatre. There are also several art installments that add a unique charm to the hills. Several families visit this place on a daily basis as it makes for a great picnic spot. Many school and college kids can also be found here owing to it being an ideal playground.

Several movies and TV shows are shot here on a regular basis, owing to the kind of picturesque background and exotic value that the locale offers.

These hills are managed by the Thrissur Municipal Corporation and seem to have invested quite a bit in it to make it an attractive tourist spot. It opens up at 10 in the morning and closes at 5 in the evening.
